Tip: Refunding the VAT/Tax element only on a sales transaction

NetSuite automatically applies the appropriate VAT/Tax code to international sales transactions. The systems normally applies VAT based on the shipping country and whether or not a Tax ID of the Customer is available or not. For example if a sale is to a EU (European Union) country the system will automatically apply an EU VAT code. If the customer record has a Tax ID then a 0% Exempt EU VAT code will be applied. However if the Tax ID is not present on the NetSuite customer record then a Standard rate EU tax code would be applied.

If VAT/Tax has being applied to a sales transaction and your customer subsequently advises you that they have a VAT/Tax registration number and you need to refund the VAT/Tax only portion of a transaction then you need to do the following:

1. Update the Tax ID on the customer record so that VAT/Tax is correctly accounted for on all future sales to the customer.

2. Set-up an "Other Charge" type item with its sale amount set to zero.

3. Create a customer Refund transaction and save it.
